Representatives are appointed by their member branch (Christian Science church or society in Oregon), and make regular reports at business meetings to inform their members about Institutional Services Committee work and outreach. They also serve as the Committee's point person by notifying their church when an AIC is released and wants to continue studying Christian Science. This may include arranging for rides from church members to church, the Reading Room, or lectures. The branch church representative works closely with the chaplain or volunteer who was working with the AIC while in custody.
No application is needed for a branch church representative, only an email from the Clerk of your branch to the IS Secretary noting the name and contact information of the representative. They will then be invited to meetings, etc.
Chaplains are class-taught (a 12-day class instruction course in spiritual healing from an authorized Christian Science teacher) students of Christian Science who have demonstrated an ability to heal, and who can present its teachings compassionately to those inquiring about Christian Science. They serve as practitioners, conduct church services, meet on a one-to-one basis with AICs, and give prayerful treatment when it is requested. Chaplains must be members of The Mother Church and a branch church or society that is a member of this committee.
Assistant Chaplains must be members of The Mother Church and a branch church or society that is a member of this committee. Any other qualifications are left to the discretion of the Executive Committee. They may hand out literature and/or assist the chaplains in church services or Sunday School teaching.
Apply by filling out the volunteer application at the bottom of this page and sending it to our PO Box or to csiscoregon@gmail.com
The Corresponding Chaplain has the same requirements as a Chaplain, but writes letters instead of visiting AICs in person. Letters use our PO Box as a return address. Letters from AICs are sent to the PO Box. The secretary scans them and emails them to the corresponding chaplain.
Apply by filling out the volunteer application found at the bottom of this page and sending it to our PO Box or to csiscoregon@gmail.com.
